New Zealand's largest and top-performing boardriders club. Three consecutive national titles. Competing at the base of Mauao for over 60 years.
Our Story
Bay Board Riders was born from the surf culture of Mount Maunganui — a town built around the ocean, where surfing isn't a hobby, it's a way of life. Since the 1960s, this club has been at the centre of that culture, running contests at Tay Street long before boardriders clubs were a thing.
What started as informal weekend sessions among locals has grown into New Zealand's largest and most successful boardriders club. With over 130 active competing members across 15 divisions — from 8-year-old groms through to Over 40 Men — Bay Board Riders is the full picture of what grassroots surfing looks like.
In 2023, the club won its first NZ Club Championship. Then won it again in 2024. And again in 2025 — becoming the only club in New Zealand history to win three consecutive national titles. The squad also represents New Zealand on the world stage at international boardrider club championships.
Three in a row is something the club is incredibly proud of. It reflects the depth of talent and the culture of BBR — not just about one or two surfers, but strong across every division.

Where We Surf
Mount Maunganui sits at the top of the Bay of Plenty — consistent swells, warm water in summer, and a coastline that works across all skill levels. This is our backyard.

Tay Street, Mount Maunganui
Every Bay Board Riders competition is held at Tay Street. Consistent beach break peaks, multiple banks working across all tides and most swell directions — it's the perfect venue for competitive surfing. On comp day, 100+ surfers are in the water and 200+ supporters line the sand. This is home.
